This year - A quick review

I don't do a Christmas Letter, because I blog and am very up to date on it I feel like a letter is not something I need to do.  But I have made a bunch of new friends over the past few months who might want to know what we have been up to, so here it goes:

January - Nathan finally went back to work after 2 weeks off at Open Scan. We rang in the new year and toasted to a year full of fun and suprises and then 5 days later Nathan was laid off.  Literally, Jan 6th Nathan had no job.  Talk about suprises! Hahaha (Its okay to laugh now)  We tried to be supportive and happy that he received an AWESOME severance package but still nervous about what the future held for our family.  We counted in 2009 that Nathan had traveled or been away from the family traveling for a little over 100 days so the first few weeks we did family things together.

February - It was starting to become more real that the job market was a tough one and that a lot of people we knew had lost their jobs also.  Nathan did handyman jobs for extra money and we started to pay debt off in a huge way with the severance money we received.  Valerie went wild with learning Asian cooking and learned a lot of new techniques. Funny how you can do that when your husband is home to corral kids ALL DAY. We also celebrated our 5th Wedding Anniversary!

March - Scarlett turned 1 and it was such a fun party.  I love how our kids never know the stresses and are just kids. Nathan went on 25 interviews and felt like he needed to go to school.  So that was the path we started to really focus on.  Valerie learned how to sew, thanks to Chrystal and Tara. We also kept ourselves busy by helping friends out babysitting, painting their houses (interior) and doing more side jobs for people.

April - Nathan and Valerie had birthdays, Unemployment kicked in and we were starting to really stress what was going to happen to our family.  Nathan had 3 good jobs call him in for 2nd interviews and they all fell through.  Nathan got a contract offer at Lucent (his first job at 14) and decided to take it. It was lousy pay, no benefits but it was the only thing that paid more than unemployment. This job was to start May 15th.

May - Prepping for Valerie's sister Stephanie's Wedding was fun and nerve wracking all at the same time. Nathan was hoping to get a better job before we left but nothing was panning out.  He was determined to get a better job before we left for California and 1 week before we left he had 4 interviews with companies ALL in the DTC (which is too far) Nothing worked out but 1 person suggested he call RGI, so he did, went in for a quick interview and they called him back before he got home from the interview. Trying not to get our hopes up we just prayed that the 2nd interview would lead to one more interview.  With 3 days until we left for California Nathan got the call that they wanted him to come back and he was offered a job that day. He was a new man!  It was a huge increase from Open Scan, better benefits, better drive, better staff, better job! He took it and then we were worry free on our vacation. Wahoo. Stephanie and Theo were married and the kids got to see everyone they had missed. (Grandma and Grandpa Horn)

June - Nathan loves his job, Valerie loves his commute (15 minutes) Lucas is planning his birthday party, Bridget is turning into a little model trying on all the things Valerie has made her, Scarlett finally grew some hair and teeth.

July - We camped with the Witte's for 4 days in the Springs for 4th of July. The kids got to see fireworks for the first time and it rained the whole time. Lucas turned 4, had an awesome BIKE birthday party and got a 2 wheeler. He announces at Red Robin that he is getting a brother. (We shook our heads no to the waiter) It was a hot summer. Valerie's parents and sister invite just her to California in October.  She buys the round trip ticket for $49 total.  .

August - Hot, Hot, Hot.  Lucas starts Preschool!  His teacher tells us that he is very polite and clean. (he likes to clean) We do many fun little things during the summer time. Nathan starts school himself and after a week is unsure if he can juggle everything.

September - Bridget starts TotSchool. (3 year old co-op with  6 kids from church) She loves it. We get a new niece. Scarlett turns 18 months. Nathan gets a lot of praises at work because he exceeds expectations.

October - We paint the exterior of the house 2x. We go to the OB appointment as a family and find out that we are pregnant...with a GIRL. Find out that we are 22 weeks pregnant, then Valerie hops on a plane to visit family and not only announce a pregnancy but a gender!  Halloween Theme is Pets. Nathan was the Store Keeper, Valerie was a bag of feed and Lucas was a FireDog, Bridget was a Kitty and Scarlett was supposed to be a fish but changed her mind and insisted on being a monkey 2 weeks after Valerie finished making the fish costume.

November - Bridget turns 3. Has a girls only Strawberry Shortcake Party. Lucas was selected to test in a reading program at the school and did swimmingly. He is advanced in Math as well. Bridget is a social butterfly and Scarlett loves to be at home with just Valerie. Nathan gets a promotion and all that comes with it. We are so proud of him.

December - Busy Busy Busy as most Decembers are. Valerie made a lot of presents herself.  We have been healthy most of the year (luckily). It has been unseasonably warm for Colorado as the kids have been able to play in the backyard and go to the park most the the month. Nathan did a great job this semester in school, as of now he has a 4.0 but still waiting on one more final grade.

It has been a whirlwind of a year and full of surprises. I think this New Years we will toast for something else! Hopefully things are still fun and exciting and right now we are just anticipating the birth of #4, our 6th Anniversary and Nathan's 2nd semester of school. Not to mention an awesome summer, ending with Lucas in Kindergarten!!!

We hope this post finds you well and happy.

Christmas 2010 - in parts - part 3

There is something that I have been plagued with my whole life. If you know me you know what I am talking about. If not, I will share...I was born with...HUGE FEET.  When I was in the 3rd grade I wore a size 8 adult shoe. When I was in High School I wore an 11.  I worked it to my advantage by becoming a swimmer and not needing flippers but now I am in my adulthood and wear a size 12/13 shoe. If you can imagine it is not exactly easy for me to find shoes in general but cute ones are next to impossible. Well for Christmas - my husband found and bought me THREE pairs of cute shoes. They not only fit but they are so cute and so me!  Flats! Hahaha.  I don't wear heels because I am 5'10 and no one want to see an awkward Valerie clopping around in heels, trust me it is not pretty. Nathan did a fabulous job. I also got a laminator with refills! SCORE!

Now its time to get to the best present ever -

A long time ago when Nathan was "home" I had drawn up plans for my new entryway.  For months it looked like this...
It just wasn't working for me. The shelves were from Lucas's Baby Room, the  bottom shelf was an old shoe rack from our 1st and only apartment and it was just a mess all of the time.  It bothered me but it was part of the toy room so there was only so much I could do about it. Well a few days before Christmas I saw my son walking around with his daddy like this...
then they would go down to the basement or the garage "work on stuff" and then come up for bed.  I wasn't able to park in the garage or check on what they were doing because Lucas was so into this secret.

Well here it is...my Christmas Present:
(We haven't painted to bottom trim yet)

Isn't it awesome? Floating shelves, a bench and a cubby for baskets/containers for shoes?  The blue matches the curtains and the accent wall in our now living room.  I made the cushion yesterday. I LOOOOOOOOVE the fabric don't you?  I am a sucker for paisley.
There are a few finishing touches that Nathan insists on making on Friday when he is home and of course the tile will have to be mopped but I love it.  I also bought Cork Squares that I am covering in coordinating fabric to go on the other side of the door which I will post later but tell me what you think?  Did you like it better the other way? Hehehe.  I am so impressed with Nathan's skills and can't wait for the rest of this room to be finished! :)

Christmas 2010 - in parts - part 2

What I made for the kids:

45 pieces of FELT FOOD!!!!
This is a small amount but I am so proud of myself!

A FELT CITY:
Do you have cut outs in your family/living room?  I took the cut outs and made panels that are actually store fronts to the city I made a Pet Shop (which doubles as a pet clinic)
Behind it there are shelves and a stretcher and a dog pillow and I just noticed my bunny doesn't have eyes. Hahaha, Naptime will fix that!

A Beauty Parlor and a Dress Shop (my kids won't let me put it up yet)

I made a mini Post Office for the back of a bookcase:
To go with these different shops I made mailbags with envelopes that have removable stamps and they are all personalized. I made felt money, and felt bandaids and wraps and felt packages.  There is still more to make but this was the basic stuff.

A Grocery Store:

I made a diaper bag for my girls and their babies.
The kids all got specific dress ups like a zoo keeper, 2 doctors, and a grocery apron.
I really went crazy this year with my sewing machine but it was totally worth it because they have not left the toy room in 2 days.  I couldn't have done any of it without Tara or Chrystal so thank you to them!

There are a few tweaks that I still need to make now that I have seen them play in there but I will add to it gradually and watch them get excited every time they get something new for their City, which they have named ZonaZona City.

I also am proud of my new and improved toy check out system.
Here are the labels for each box.
It has worked out beautifully so far.

What do you think?

Christmas 2010 - in parts

Part One:

Someone (who shall remain nameless...ahem Bridget) messed with our alarm clock so when I looked up this morning and saw it was 7:25 I panicked a little because the kids never sleep past 7 and it was Christmas morning! What was their problem? I quickly headed downstairs and checked my email and looked at my computer clock and it was only 6:15. Bummer, I got up for no reason.  -But- 4 minutes later they were up and Bridget yells out "Oh my Josh! I love it! Santa Came!"
Which woke up everyone else, and then it was time to let the festivities begin!!!  Nathan made strudel crumb cake and we took our family picture, here I am ...31 weeks measuring 34. I am a monster! Aaah!
See I am thrilled to get my picture taken.
Bridget wanted blowy hair so she sat near the vent.
Lucas in his ZooKeeper Costume and totally loving his rescue robots. They are the coolest toy I have ever seen!
I am going to say that the STUPID BUZZ LIGHTYEAR took me 11 minutes to get out of the box.

Nathan was laughing at me so hard and kept taking pictures of me getting mad. Punk.

The kids were all so excited and grateful for everything they got. They loved everything and called everyone to thank them. Then they played and played and laughed and laughed and then it was time for stockings!!
Bridget screamed "I got my barbie!"
Lucas was so happy "The ramp! The ramp!"
Scarlett ate candy through the wrapper. Haha.

Here is Nathan and Lucas enjoying their HexBugs.
I am made Ham and Funeral Potatoes for dinner with Shallots and Green Beans...mmmm.
It was the best ham I have ever made.

That is it for this part.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I sure did, I was so surprised at what Nathan made/bought me that I almost burst into tears. But that is all for tomorrow because I made a lot of stuff for the kids that I am really proud of and I am just as proud of Nathan for what he did for me. :) Until then....

Christmas Adam and Eve...

For Christmas Adam (as MM calls it) we had meatballs and mashed potatoes (adam's apples) hahhaa. We read our 3 favorite Christmas stories and then all shared a giant Chocolate Bar.  This is only going to get harder the more kids we have. Hahaha.

For Christmas Eve we cleaned the house top to bottom so Santa could bring the best cleaner a special prize. We did this last year and the kids were so proud of the person who got it.  We do this also because Santa doesn't want to "trip" over anything that doesn't belong.  We also decided what the kids will leave for Santa. This year it is Cinnamon Toast and Orange Juice.  We have to be different of course.

We also drop all of our unwanted and gently used toys off at Goodwill on our way to Grandma and Grandpa Witte's.

At the Witte's we decorated cookies. Ate Yummy Sandwiches (a Witte tradition)
Put on our Christmas Jammies.
 And then SANTA came!!!
My son was more than excited!
Adorable! Christmas is much more magical with kids!
Everyone opened their presents from each other. Had a few laughs. Then we headed home.
Here is the Ward's Christmas Picture from last Saturday. My kids went right to bed and are so excited for the morning. I am too!

Fog is a disappointment

The kids were eating their breakfast.

They looked out the window.

Lucas immediatley leaves the table and puts his snow gear on.  I don't ask questions, I just watch.

Then he runs to the front door.
Then he yells out. "Dang it! Its just FOG!"
He was so upset that it didn't snow.  We checked the weather channel and it wasn't even supposed to snow.  The kids were so upset.  "Why isn't it snowing yet?"  I told them it won't snow until January. They were so disappointed.  I told them that since it was too cold to play outside we would go to monkey business instead.
This is excitement at 7:36 in the morning.  We then did the advent calendar where the TO DO was to go out and play in the snow. GREAT.  I told them that it was okay we would still go to Monkey Business and after nap we would make a cookie of their choice.  They were so good yesterday at my OB appointment. Where I was 31 weeks measuring 34. Yeah, I know. I am getting huge. I will post pictures of this belly on Christmas.

In other news I am pretty sure we are set on the 2 sets of names and Nathan will get the final say once she is born.  So exciting!

Overwhelmed --- with responses

I think people had a lot of great things to say. I appreciate that.

Free Time is really what you define as free.  When I take time for myself to sew...I am sewing things for my family.  When I catch up on a show I am usually folding laundry.  I don't just sit idly and do nothing. When I am reading, I am reading for Book Group or like another friend commented to better my skills as a house manager. But as Lindsey said it - we all need time for "me"

I don't like the term "Super Mom or Super Woman" because I am definitely not that.  I just do what works for me.  There are days when I leave my kids unsupervised and all hell breaks loose and I just have to laugh and deal with it.  I am reminded of this POST in particular.  Oh man those were some crazy days.

I feel like I need to clarify some things. My last post was not to make other moms feel less than average.

"I think its great that you do all the things you do and you have free time to boot. However, I don't really get why you feel like you have to let everyone know everything you are doing and how good you are at doing it. It generally makes other moms feel like they are less than average.

So when you list all the amazing things you do and all the free time you have and then ask "Am I weird?" To me it reads, "Look at everything I do. Can you top it?" It upsets me that the other women who have commented put themselves down or feel the need to justify why they don't have free time. You get the validation that you are doing a great job with your kids and they get to feel like, "what the crap am I doing wrong?"

So, to the original question concerning whether or not SAHMs have/should have free time. My answer-does it really matter? We are all trying to be good moms and stay sane.

And while I think that we should all try to focus on the positives and good experiences we have in motherhood, a healthy dose of reality is great cause for finding common ground."

Deep down it is not my goal to make people feel bad.  It is not my intention to alienate other moms but to give them the tools to do some fun stuff. That is why I do my other blog.  I am trying to share with other people all of the things they can do with their kids like I do.

I never felt like I should edit myself on how good my kids are because they are very good. My blog isnt to brag or put down others it is for my family all over the country who read it to see what we are up to and get the latest pictures on the kids.

They have never commented on me gloating or bragging or embellishing because they know how I am. I have always been very creative, activity minded and good at looking at the brighter side of things.  I have posted before about the terrible days I have had but they always have a lighthearted spin on things.  I try to serve others and help my friends out as much as possible, as people in my ward can vouch for.` I always do a project or something fun while other kids are here and it's not to be better than anyone, or to one up anyone or anyone else.  I almost always try to do something fun while my kids have friends over because I liked that when a babysitter did that for me when I was young.

I was simply explaining how I get "free time" because my kids nap or because of how I have structured their time for them to be independent and not rely solely on me.  If it were hard or difficult or I was burnt out I wouldn't have had my kids so close.

I am sorry if anyone feels like I am fake, or trying to be better than everyone else. I have always been this way...even in High School. I am good at juggling a lot of things at once. I just decided a long time ago with Nathan what was going to be important to us:
Structure, Independence, and Problem Solving Skills and he helps execute when he is home.  I am trying to inspire those who may need it or wonder how I am able to do it.

I remember someone once telling me that a clean house and dinner on the table was the most important thing to them and instead of criticizing them I thought "I hope to be like that one day"

I think my friend Hilary was right when she said
I think you have been blessed with the abilities needed for your family to run it the way you do.

Exactly.  People who nurse and attachment parent are able to do it because they were blessed with the abilities...I could never do nor want to do it, but that is why we are all different.  I appreciate everyones feedback and think you are all great mothers and we should all take some time to pick out what we like from each other and use it in our own homes.  I think that is what I was going for.  Like a DIY blog, you see it then you edit/tweak it and do it your own way. :)

Sorry if I offended anyone.

What do you think?

A local radio station had a debate today and I got to be apart of it...

There is scientific evidence that the average stay at home mom has 30 to 40 hrs free time each week. What do you think?

Here is my side:
I have a 4 year old, a 3 year old a 22 month old and I am 8 months pregnant.

My kids all nap at the same time for about 2-3 hours...during that time I do stuff for just me. I don't do any of my mommy duties because I need the break.

My kids all go to bed at 8:30 and that is when I get more free time. My husband and I do stuff together and read and catch up on our time.

I dont let my kids watch much tv either.  While I am doing "chores" they are doing their chores too.  If I am in the kitchen doing dishes, they are wiping the tables or bringing me things to wash. Most of our tasks are done this way.

I get more time to do things because I include them in the process. I also make sure that they get at least 1 hour or more of my undivided attention, this is where we play games or do a project or just do something together.  I have a blog for other mommies to follow my lead on the activities department.

I wouldn't say 30 hours of free time but I do get quite a bit because I am good at time management, and incorporating my daily tasks into their daily tasks.  My kids adapt to my schedule, not the other way around.  I have a pretty clean house, we rarely eat out and my kids are well behaved...well for the most part.

Everyday is different, I can't say I have a perfect system but it works for me. It works enough for me to not go crazy of feel overwhelmed every single day.

I don't agree with over scheduling my family either.  Everyone in the house has something that just they get to do, preschool, dance etc...

Am I weird?  Why were there so many people against me saying they NEVER get free time?

Thoughts?

Ward Christmas Dinner

A nice evening, I spent the entire time in the kitchen. Nathan had the kids and they were all super in the behavior department.

The kids got to make a craft.
Visit with Santa.
I can't wait to see the Ward Picture! :) Nathan took this one.
My kids got to go first.
As soon as Santa walked in Scarlett says "Hi Man!"
Santa-"Hello kids"
Scarlett - "Hello Man."

All 3 go up to him, but Scarlett needed a little coaxing.

Lucas - "I know you are not a miracle worker, I know this."
Santa - "Oh, what would you like this year?"
Lucas - "I really want a brother. Nothing that fancy."
Santa looks at me.
Lucas - "My mom and dad need to go on more dates for this to happen. I'll just take a Hot Wheels Ramp."
Santa - "Have you been good?"
Lucas - "Not really.  I haven't protected my sisters like I should have"
Bridget - "Be done Lucas, I want everything pink. And a Barbie."
Santa - "Okay Bridget."
Bridget - "I have been excellent."
Santa - "Scarlett what about you?"
Scarlett - "Goodbye Man."

Then it was time to see their friends. It was a full house.
I was home by 8:30 and everything was done. Now it is time to sit down because my back is killing me! :)

This week...

we have been progressing on our TO DO's for our Advent Calendar...sorting toys for goodwill, going out for ice cream:
*Please note* My kids have NEVER been to Dairy Queen!
So of course experiencing upside downside good was important!
Scar had M&M, Lucas had Chocolate Cookie Dough and Bridget had Strawberry Cheesequake. I love their mini size...perfect!
Of course Scarlett topped off Lucas's and mine and was still asking for more. What a piggie!
Speaking of Piggies...Bridget finished hers in no time.

Then today was Lucas's Christmas Program at Preschool. It was so cute!
I was in the 3rd row so our pictures were not that great, also - the chick in front of me would flash right before me so it was hard to take a good shot.
Scarlett was so excited she was shouting Goog Job to Lucas the whole time and Merry Christmas every time she heard it.  Lucas tells me all of the time how happy he is that Robert is in his class.
They are such good buddies.

Its been a fun few days and I am glad we have a few weeks off to veg and relax. Well until the new baby comes anyway. :)

Smokin Machines

I have been sewing for 3 weeks straight.  All Christmas gifts. What is weird about this?  I just learned how to sew in February!  I am so proud of myself and Nathan is too.  Lucas was trying to figure out what I was making this morning and said "Mom you better stop before that Machine starts to smoke!" Hahaha.

I finally finished the last thing I am sewing this year.  I started them last night and finished them this morning...

CHRISTMAS PAJAMAS!!!!
The girls got ruffles and they look so cute. Who wouldn't love flannel PJ's on Christmas when its going to be 60 degrees in Colorado? Aww.  Thanks Chrystal for teaching me how to sew and for encouraging me to make more and more stuff!

My kids have no clue what I am working on and that is what is going to make the surprises even better! :)

Hurry Before it's too LATE

Run outside its snowing BIG FLUFFY FLAKES! Finally!
Everyone runs out, jumps in it then needs a better perspective...
The pictures were taken with my camera phone so they suck!  But you get the idea on what was happening just a few minutes ago...
Scar not only has huge cheeks but a huge mouth too...

Now for a story:

I picked up Lucas from school today and his teacher told me this little story.

Lucas - Not all Dads do cool things.
Robert - My Dad works downtown.
Lucas - My Dad doesn't.
Robert - My Dad uses a calc-a-lator at work.
Lucas - My Dad uses one for his homework. My Dad just sits at a desk and solves problems. He has a lot of problems at his work that only he can fix. That is what he tells my Mom.
Robert - That isn't very cool Lucas.
Lucas - I know. But it is a really important job.
Tony - My Dad is a Policeman.
Lucas and Robert - PAUSE (I assume they ponder a bit)
Lucas - No fair.
Robert - That is cool Tony.

I love boys, I hope I get another one someday. :)
